William “Bill” Gudykunst, professor of Human Communication Studies, died at South Coast Medical Center Jan. 20 at the age of 57.
Dr. Gudykunst received his B.A. and M.A. in sociology from Arizona State University and his Ph.D. in Speech Communication from University of Minnesota. He came to Cal State Fullerton in 1989 after teaching at Arizona State for five years. He also taught at State University of New York at Albany, Rutgers University, University of Hartford and University of Maryland, Far East Extension, Yokosuka, Japan. While at Cal State Fullerton, he served as acting coordinator of the Asian American Studies Program and as graduate adviser in his department.
Dr. Gudykunst was recognized as one of the leading scholars in the world in intercultural communication. The 2000 Communication Research Reports noted that he was the fourth most productive active communication scholar when weighted books and articles in communication journals were combined. He authored or co-authored 13 books or monographs and edited or co-edited 18 books or monographs; he has authored or co-authored more than 75 journal articles and published more than 60 book chapters. Professor Gudykunst presented more than 90 competitively selected and invited papers at national and international conventions. He also served on 13 editorial boards over the past 24 years and was editor, special issue editor, and co-editor of seven journals and yearbooks. Dr. Gudykunst received many awards and honors for his scholarly work.
